Tokyo day one: Capybaras, Pokémon, Totoro, and Ginza

On our first full day in Tokyo, we took the subway to Sumida, a suburb of the city, to visit Café Capyba, where we had the chance to hang out and snuggle with two capybaras.

They’re very cute and love being petted and fed carrots, grass, and food pellets. Their handlers even taught us how to massage the capybaras’ fur with a rope toy, which made the animals feel so relaxed they lay down and purred.

The capybaras are very well treated, have lots of breaks and opportunities for naps, baths, and quiet time between visits, and their handlers are super gentle with them and quite obviously love them.

We loved spending time with them too, stroking their long, almost needle-like fur, and telling them what good capybaras they are. We took a million photos and couldn’t get enough of them during our 30-minute visit, and we were reluctant to leave!

The Café is a short walk from Tokyo Skytree, so we took the opportunity to visit the Skytree mall afterward, to find lunch and visit a Pokémon store and a large Studio Ghibli store. We spent a leisurely couple of hours there, meandering in the shops, and trying to stay awake through the jet lag.

After dinner, we took the subway to Shimbashi station, to walk up and down the wide and busy streets of Ginza, in an effort to stay awake, before heading back to our hotel in Minato for a good night’s rest.

Visiting the three neighbourhoods was a great way to spend our first full day in Tokyo, ease into Japan’s timezone, and delight in some fun experiences in this vast city.
