Our first two days in Oslo, Norway, were sunny and warm – making it a pure delight to walk around and enjoy the city. The air here is just as perfect as it is in Copenhagen, cool and soft, with just the right amount of humidity.
We went for lunch at Oslo Raw with our friends and Oslo hosts, JP and N, where we had beautiful waffles with gorgeous raw and vegan jams and creams on them. Who knew sweets for lunch could be so good?!?
In the afternoon we took a walk by the Akerselva river to the Mathallen Oslo food market, where we enjoyed veggie burgers and veggie curries – and donuts! Will all our posts about Oslo focus on food? Maybe…
On our second day, we toured Oslo city hall, where the Nobel prizes are presented. The artwork on the walls of the main hall are monumental and astounding.
The tour took us into about five other rooms, including the city’s council chamber, where we got a history lesson about Oslo’s patron saint, St. Halvard. Another room had entire walls covered in paintings depicting life in Norway through the seasons. In the room for wedding ceremonies, a painting by Edward Munch – Life – was built into the wall so that everyone getting married there has this beautiful piece of art presiding over their ceremony. How gorgeous is that?!?
Next, our hosts took us for an amazing lunch on the waterfront at Olivia, before taking us for a sauna/ocean swim at Oslo Badstuforening followed by ice cream at Paradis Gelateria, where I had chocolate sorbet for the first time ever – and it was incredible!!
A long walk through the wide and pristine Oslo city streets took us home, tired but happy. Do we love Oslo best or Copenhagen? It’s hard to decide… So we choose to love them both – equally.
