For our last day in Copenhagen, we took a metro out to Copenhagen Zoo, about 20 minutes west of the city centre in Frederiksberg. It’s one of the most amazing zoos we’ve ever visited, and definitely worth the trip.
There are lots of winding paths that offer surprises around every corner, many different ways of viewing the animals, and enclosures that seem equally as innovative and stimulating for the animals themselves. It’s a very thoughtful design overall.
Our favourites were the elephant enclosures – including several expansive indoor and outdoor spaces that seem to put the elephants and their wellbeing first.
We also loved the polar bear exhibit, where we watched from inside a long glass tube under water as two of the giants swam and played with rubber toys.
And it was exciting to see a brush-tailed bettong jump around his indoor enclosure and then jump over the barrier to explore his surroundings a little more (knowing, we were told, that there’s an entrance for him to get back in whenever he chooses). Plus, there’s an absolutely adorable baby hippo, two pandas, and two white rhinos that were sleeping at the very edge of there enclosure, giving us an opportunity to see them super up close. They were all amazing.
We spent about five hours exploring the entire zoo including walking up a replica Eiffel Tower to a viewing platform where we had wonderful views of Copenhagen.
For dinner, we stayed in the Frederiksberg area, and enjoyed a vegan dinner at Beyla. We had a 7 course tasting menu including Lion’s Mane Mushroom steak, and their signature fried mushroom with Gochujang sauce. We loved every dish and would gladly go back for more when we’re on Copenhagen again.
By the time we got back, it was too late and too cold for a swim, sadly, so it was just packing and a good sleep to prepare for our early morning flight to Oslo on Saturday.
Copenhagen was awesome – and four days was not enough! We plan to come back one day and visit the rest of the sights we didn’t get a chance to see, and investigate in more detail some of the places and neighborhoods we only quickly touched on.
